Legend has it St. George Littledale once hunted for a tur in Canada's Arctic. Littledale was disillusioned by the misty mountain covering the area that prevented him seeing the Tur. Littledale waited with his companions for Littledale each morning to return to the camp. However, they couldn't locate the tur because of the mist. Eventually, they reached a ledge high up in the mountains and found the tur. Littledale, his guide, had been waiting to them since the early evening hours. Littledale woke up at two in morning and returned home by eight thirty.

Despite being the famous hunter, St. George Littledale never killed a wolf. He was unable and forced to return home to the camp. However, this did not stop him from writing about wolves. He did not know the dangers of the ram and how hunters would survive in such harsh conditions. Littledale's personal life is included in the book. Littledale was inspired by his Arctic expedition and his love to animals while writing this book.
